Cleaning the kitchen

Fridge/Freezer

Remove any food and take out all of the shelves and drawers.

Using a wet soapy sponge wipe down the whole inside of the fridge, including the smaller compartments on the inside of the door and dry them well.

Then clean down the shelves and drawers in hot soapy water, wipe dry and place back in the fridge/freezer.

Sink

Use hot water with a squirt of washing up liquid in it then thoroughly scrub the sink including all sides, plughole and the tap with non-abrasive sponge or even an old toothbrush which can work great with scrubbing small crevices and getting into awkward fittings and fixtures.

Surfaces

Use an anti-bacterial cleaning spray and a cloth to clean down all surfaces and cabinet fronts and fascias to remove any grease, dirt, stains and grime.

Oven

You can use any oven cleaner that is on the market, however you must follow the instructions very carefully and always wear protective gloves because oven cleaners contain chemicals.

Make sure the oven is turned off! Remove all shelves and spray the cleaning chemicals around the inside of the oven.

It may be a good idea to leave a plastic sheet at the foot of the oven to catch any drips from the chemicals.

Leave chemicals on the oven for at least four hours then clean thoroughly.

Cleaning the bathroom

Scrub the sink bath, toilet and shower with a good quality, reliable bathroom cleaning product. Always use a sanitisation spray and not bleach. Also make sure that all mirrors and windows are cleaned with glass cleaner to get rid of dust and watermarks.

Don’t forget to clean all light fittings, mop and vacuum the floor. Dust all surfaces and furniture including shelves and top of wardrobes etc.

If you have a wooden floor then mop and use an oil soap or if it’s carpeted flooring then use a vacuum and treat stains accordingly using a soft stain remover.

Once again don’t forget mirrors, windows and skirting boards. They are always a must do.

Cleaning the bedrooms

Vacuum or mop the floor, depending on your flooring material. Dust all around fixtures and fittings such as lamps, shades, blinds and shelving. Clean the windows and any mirrors.

Once again don’t forget skirting boards.

Cleaning the living room

Make sure all bins are emptied and all floors are swept, mopped and vacuumed. Take photographs of all rooms cleaned (before and after). Following these steps should make receiving your full deposit back more likely if you have a landlord.

General cleaning tips

Once you have followed all of these steps you can then breathe a sigh of relief knowing you have done your utmost to get your deposit back from your landlord and the new tenants will move in and feel as comfortable as you did living in a clean environment.
